The number of people on federal supervised release has tripled in the last 30 years, leading to an overburdened system where probation officers report caseloads twice as high as recommended by best practices.
The federal supervised release system costs taxpayers more than $500 million each year, without increasing public safety.
Supervised release was intended to be used sparingly and only when necessary to support reentry and deterrence. Today, however, it is imposed in virtually every case, without clear evidence it’s needed or effective.
Our outdated and overreaching supervised release system threatens to hold America back by:
