In March, the Iowa House passed an important probation reform bill in a near-unanimous 93-1, bipartisan vote. The legislation, House File 349, would improve public safety in our communities and grow our workforce by encouraging people on probation to pursue education, vocational certification, and employment.

The IA legislature has officially reconvened, and our momentum remains strong. HF 349 would make Iowa smart on crime by building a probation system that supports and encourages people to become successful, law-abiding citizens. Dear Senator, As a concerned Iowan, I am writing today to urge you to schedule a vote on HF 349 (also known as S-3139), important legislation that will improve our state’s probation system and make our communities more safe. I was happy to hear that the bill passed the House Public Safety Committee in a unanimous, bipartisan vote. It went on to pass the full House 93-1 and was recently advanced by the Senate Judiciary Committee. There is broad, statewide support for this legislation including from business leaders, faith groups, victims advocacy organizations, and other organizations who make up the Iowans United for Opportunity coalition. HF 349 would make Iowa smart on crime by building a probation system that supports and encourages people to become successful, law-abiding citizens. It would also stop wasting millions of Iowa’s tax dollars—this is money we can reinvest in programs that keep our communities safe. Importantly, this bill would give Iowans a fair chance and strengthen our workforce by setting up a probation system that incentivizes work, education, vocational training and self-improvement - all of which will help strengthen our communities and make us safer. For these reasons, I urge you to schedule a vote on HF 349 and vote Yes. Sincerely,
