People across the country have united to transform the supervision system and end the supervision-to-prison pipeline. It's time to replace mass incarceration and mass supervision with real pathways to work and well-being.
THE FACTS:
The federal supervised release system has grown by almost 300% in the past 25 years and now costs taxpayers more than $500 million yearly.
Almost 90% of people sent to federal prison in non-immigration cases are also sentenced to supervised release, with an average sentence of about 4 years.
Twice as many people on supervised release end up getting sent back to prison for technical violations (like missing a meeting with a supervision officer) than for any new crimes committed
Putting too many people on supervision for terms that are too long hurts people's ability to further their careers and be there for their families.
Individuals who participate in education programs have a 43% lower chance of recidivating compared to those who did not complete a correctional education program.
This isn't right. But we can safely reduce the number of people who are placed on supervised release, and safely reduce unnecessary time on supervision.
If you believe that people on supervised release who further their education and vocational training should have the opportunity to reduce their time on supervision, show your support by signing this petition.
